The left behind pug is allergic to just about everything. My vet calls him the most allergic dog she's ever seen. For years I've been making my own dog food so that I can control what he's eating. He also has a prescription for Science Diet D/D for when I need the convenience of a dry food.Prescription dog foods are expensive so I'm always scanning the ingredient lists of new dog foods I see on the grocery store shelves. A few months ago I discovered Rachael Ray's Nutrish Dry Dog Food
I checked the ingredient list of her dog food and it sounded promising so I bought some. I can always tell within a couple of days if the pug eats something to which he is allergic. He had no bad reaction whatsoever to Nutrish. This was great news.
Nutrish runs about $15.00 for a 14 pound bag in Food Lion. That's less than half the price I was paying for the Science Diet. It's working so well that I have given up making my own dog food, which is a huge time saver for me.
Even if your dog does not suffer from allergies, it may be that Rachel is leaving out ingredients that our dogs don't need anyway. I'm no vet, that's for sure, but I am grateful for an off-the-shelf product that my dog is doing well on.
I think you can get a free sample of Nutrish by going to Rachel Ray's website, which also states that a portion of her proceeds from sales of Nutrish go towards supporting animal rescue.
I decided to use my Saturday slot to share with you some things I really like. These are not going to be solicited reviews and I don't have a giveaway. It's just stuff I like, use and want to tell you about.

I like the idea of "stuff you like" - and without the commercialism of a giveaway or product review. There's nothing wrong with either, but I prefer a "stuff I like" approach, personally.
I often talk about things I like or places I go - simply because they are real in my life. No endorsements, no giveaways. Just things we like and use. So I'll be reading for your Saturday stuff, and its amiable authenticity.
Hi Mary,
I might have to give that a try. I started making home made dog food fo Kingston (my mutt ;-) about a month ago. It is quite time consuming, and while I got a few recipes off the internet, I was never sure I was giving him enough of the right thing. He's also about 60lbs. so he's a big one! Care to share any of your dog food recipes with me? Thanks!
Grace
Hi Grace - I used the third meat, third veg, third starch recipe. So my dog food was 1/3 chicken leg quarters, 1/3 potatoes and 1/3 carrots. I loaded up my roaster will all three ingredients, threw it in the oven at 400 for an hour or two, then de-boned the chicken, chopped everything up, divided it into 1 week portions, each in a separate tub and put everything in the freezer. Did you start making your own for allergy reasons?
Hi BLW - I'm glad you like this feature. I love to share things I've found and this seemed like a good outlet to do it!
Sooo cute!
This is why I feed Cassie the Corgi human food: it's easy to identify what, if any, ingredients bother her. Lately, though, I've thought it would be good to lard the food with a little commercial dog food (she's lost a pound, which is plenty when you start at 24 lbs), if I could find one that wasn't full of strange gunk. This sounds pretty promising.
I hate to bash Rachel but i was disappointed to find Nutrish is corn based which most quality dog foods have taken out as a carb source. It also then double packed in the corn with corn gluten. These are common allergens
@Anon - Luckily my allergic to everything pug is happy with Nutrish and I'm happy to have an off-the-shelf dog food for him! Good luck in your search for whatever works for your dogs!
We received a sample pack in the mail. I read the front of the package (beef) and it stated:
* No chicken by-product meal or filler
* No artificial color or preservatives
So, I flip the package over and started to read the list of ingredients and WHAT DID IT SAY?
CHICKEN MEAL and the more I read, the more it proved that this is CLEARLY a case of False Advertising!!! (Where’s the FTC when they’re needed?)
For a non-partisan review of this dog food, you should look at:

(No, I'm not associated with them in an form. I found the site in Google, while trying to find out more info on this dog food. I left comments on that site, too.)
I won't be feeding this to our dogs.
I was feeding my two Pit Bulls IAMS and my female, was allergic to something in the food.I saw Racheals dog food, bought the beef brand and now my dog is doing great. No scratching and licking paws.
