Today, September 21st, the final regular season game is being played at Yankee Stadium. The House that Ruth Built in 1923 is old and outdated and I’m sure the new stadium will be more efficient and will better serve the needs of the teams and the fans. Still, I’m sad. It doesn’t seem quite right. I’m not even a “real” Yankee fan. I’m a Yankee fan through my native New Yorker boyfriend. If he weren't my boyfriend, or if he ceases to be my boyfriend, I probably won’t be a Yankee fan anymore, or at least not a Yankee follower. Even at that, I’m bothered by this passing of a piece of American history. I did actually get to see the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium. I appreciated the history of watching the Yankees play in Yankee Stadium at the time and now, with the passing of this era, I’m grateful I got the chance. I know it will still be fun to go see the Yankees at the new stadium. Heck, it’s fun to spend a summer evening at the ballpark no matter where you are. But I know that in the new, big, shiny, homogenous stadium, it just won’t be the same and I’m sad about that.
